Today, we began our day in Tzfat, one of the four holy cities of Israel (and my favorite city in the country). Representing the element of air, this city is full of mysticism and Kabbalistic Judaism. Upon arrival to the city, we trekked below the surface to a dark, dungeon-like cave, where the only light came from a small hole 30 feet above. After a few moments of absolute silence, we began to sing. The Hebrew words echoed throughout the desolate area, creating an emotional aura indescribable in words. Though it caused both participants and advisors alike to break into tears, it was one of the most powerful and beautiful events I had ever experienced.
From there, we walked back up to city level to meet a local artist and expert in Jewish Kabbalah. He shared with us his experience going from an American art student to becoming a student in Judaic spirituality. He then went on to explain the meaning behind the countless art pieces hung around his gallery. We were even given the opportunity to purchase prints of his work.
Following our lesson in Kabbalah, we were sent off to the artist colony of Tzfat for an opportunity to acquire various pieces of jewelry, paintings, Jewish culture symbols and other forms of art created by the locals.
We, then, drove to Otzar Hastam to learn about the work of a Jewish Sopher, one who hand writes the scriptures used in Torahs, Mezuzot, and Tefillin. Additionally, we were given the chance to try our own hand at it by using a feather quill and parchment to write our Hebrew name.
From there, we made our way to the kibbutz we were staying at for some well-deserved rest. However, we could not sleep until we commenced our much anticipated lip syncing competition prelims. Those who signed up took turns on the stage to present their musical talents to a panel of judges consisting of our very own Simcha Brick and Rebecca Aryeh. Izak and Isaac stole the show with their renditions of “Ex’s and Oh’s” and “I Want You Back” respectively, but all the contestants had stellar performances.
While it’s nearly impossible to pick just one, this day is definitely a candidate for the best day of the entire trip. The combination of learning, bonding, and fun makes this day one for the books!
